Matteo Trentin (Quick-Step Floors) has won the second stage of the Vuelta a Burgos. The Italian was the fastest in the final sprint on the day of his birthday.

The second stage in the Spanish race was 153 kilometres long, with a route that included one second category climb and some rolling hills near the end.

An escape group was formed in the early kilometers and got an advantage of more than three minutes over the peloton. Ben King (Dimension Data), Luis Mas (Caja Rural-Seguros RGA), Alexandre Pichot (Direct Energie), Juan Osorio (Manzana Postobon), Daniel Diaz (Delko Marseille Provence KTM), Sjoerd Van Ginneken (Roompot-Nederlandse Loterij) and Iabi Salas (Burgos BH), stayed ahead for most of the stage.

The front group was caught with nine kilometres to go and the pack prepared to face a sprint finish.

Trentin showed to have the better legs for the final sprint and crossed the finish line ahead of Adam Blythe (Aqua Blue Sport), Tim Ariesen (Roompot Nederlanse Loterij), Romain Cardis (Direct Energie) and Pier Paolo de Negri (Nippo-Vini Fantini).

Team Sky's Mikel Landa remains in the lead of the General Classification.
