Primoz Roglic outsmarts peloton to win stage 4 in Pais Vasco

Primoz Roglic of LottoNL-Jumbo has won the fourth stage of the Vuelta al Pais Vasco. The Slovenian attacked in the last few kilometers and finished just ahead of the pack.

The 174km stage connected the region's two most important cities, San Sebastian and Bilbao. The course included two second-category climb, including the Puerto de Vivero shortly before the finish.

Amael Moinard (BMC Racing Team), Jonathan Lastra (Caja Rural-Seguros RGA), Toms Skujins (Cannondale-Drapac) and Maxim Belkov (Katusha-Alpecin) formed the breakaway of the day and reached an advantage of about five minutes in respect to the peloton.

A crash took place at around 30 kilometers from the finish as several riders collided with road furniture. Several riders were forced to abandon as a result, including Dimension Data leader Stephen Cummings, UAE Team Emirates' Darwin Atapuma and Cofidis' Daniel Navarro.

Alberto Contador was involved in the crash as well but the Trek-Segafredo leader did not suffer any serious injuries and soon found his way back into the peloton.

Minutes later, on the last ascent of the day, the Spaniard struggled with mechanical issues and was forced to take the bike of teammate Julien Bernard in order to continue.

At this point, the last remaining escapees had already been caught by the peloton. BMC's Nicholas Roche then made an attempt for glory but the Irish rider was soon reeled back in as the pack was determined to neutralize the situation.

Roman Kreuziger, Simon Yates and Primoz Roglic were among those trying attacks in the following minutes, all with little success as a group sprint seemed inevitable once the last attacker was caught on the descent.

Roglic, who had already shown himself on the climb, had different plans and attacked again in the last few kilometers. This time the LottoNL-Jumbo rider was more effective and managed to stay ahead of the peloton and take the victory with an advantage of several seconds.

Michael Matthews won the sprint for second place ahead of Giovanni Visconti. David de la Cruz of Quick-Step finished safely in the pack and remains in the overall lead with two stages to go.

A late crash, shortly before the sprint, meant yet another delay for Contador but as the hold-up took place in the last kilometer there should not be any actual time loss for the Spaniard.
