Fifth victory for Marcel Kittel at Scheldeprijs

Quick-Step Floors' Marcel Kittel has taken the victory at the Scheldeprijs. The German was the fastest in the final sprint in the Belgian city of Schoten.

The day started in a very emotional way with a big welcoming of Tom Boonen (Quick-Step Floors) who had his last race in Belgium. After the neutralized start, the rider's grandfather waved the flag to signal the official start and the peloton cruised through Boonen's home town, Mol.

An escape group was formed not too long after the start and managed to create a gap of over 3 minutes. Marco Mathis (Katusha-Alpecin), Stijn Steels (Sport Vlaanderen-Baloise), Pim Ligthart (Roompot-Nederlandse Loterij), Frederik Veuchelen (Wanty-Groupe Gobert), Christophe Premont (Veranda's Willems-Crelan), Julien Stassen (WB-Veranclassic Aquality Protect) and Eugert Zhupa (Wilier-Selle Italia), were in front for most of the course.

With 30 kilometers to go, Mathis and Premont were dropped from the front of race and soon caught by the peloton. Just before the 20 kilometer mark more of the front group was reeled back in. Lighart and Zhupa stayed ahead a little longer but eventually faced the same fate.

Just passed the three kilometer mark, there was a crash in the main group involving riders of Dimension Data, Quick-Step, Lotto-Soudal and Lotto NL-Jumbo.

A diminished peloton maintained a high pace in the last kilometers with a strong Bora-hansgrohe leading the way. The last meters saw Boonen working hard to position Kittel and the German did not disappoint, crossing the line with a good advantage over Elia Viviani (Team Sky) and Nacer Bouhanni (Cofidis).

This is the fifth victory for Kittel in the Belgian race.
